Adapt and Overcome
Washington Irving, born on this date back in 1783, was one of the most famous and most prolific American authors of the nineteenth century. He is primarily remembered for short stories such as “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” introducing the Headless Horseman, and for penning an extensive biography of George Washington — who he was named after.
Through humorous satire, Irving warned that we should learn from the past and be cautious about the future. Throughout his journey in the Dreaming Dreams trilogy, Adam applies his experience and knowledge learned through past events to his daily life. As his life experience grows, he becomes more mindful of the potential risks of his choices. He transforms from an inexperienced youth to a man who’s wise beyond his years.
As Adam and Tari age, they grow in their ability to meet every obstacle with the confidence to overcome it. Irving commented on such a quality by saying, “Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them.” We all have the ability to adapt to such practices in our own lives. Let us all develop the courage to meet life’s challenges with a cautious yet confident outlook.
