Amongst the Stars

In recognition of the upcoming Earth Day on April 22nd, let us reflect on this amazing photograph of 3 billion stars as one of the most awe-inspiring views known to man. Ironically, in all its grandeur, this snapshot is but a fraction of what exists. Within our tiny Milky Way Galaxy there are over 100 billion stars, each with a minimum of a single planet orbiting it. We are astounded by the unimaginable possibility of the existence of thousands more galaxies like our own.

When we expand our view we are presented with space in its endless immensity. An analysis by the Hubble Space Telescope of an area of space only a fraction of the size of the moon revealed over 5,000 galaxies similar to our own. The scale and mystery of the universe confounds even the most gifted of minds.

As we, the 8 billion inhabitants of our miniscule planet, gaze out at the infinite number of stars and other galactic bodies, we feel the immense weight of the insignificance of ourselves, the minute thoughts of our minds. We know we are but a tiny, intangible speck of paint on the creator’s canvas. How can we believe that no other intelligent beings exist in the vastness of the universe?

But we must protect what we know and what we’ve been given. We must bring purpose to our miniscule footprint in the universe. Going forward, let us act, innovate, and implement new things for the betterment of the human race as we address concerns plaguing our precious home. Businesses, governments, communitie, and individual citizens — each accounted for and accountable — must stand together for common goals:

  • Sustainable energy for all

  • World peace — the end of oppressive governments, racism, hatred and biases, violence and wars.

  • Create opportunity rather than handouts for the less fortunate

  • Sustainable food systems and distribution of the same

  • Cures for disease and the use of technology to dramatically reduce healthcare costs

  • Unified assistance for those affected by natural disaster

  • End human pollution and our negative effects on the environment

  • Exploration of the universe

As Adam learned in Adam in Taoland, true happiness comes in the service of others, so we must learn to work together for the benefit of all. Let us live by the individual motto: When I go up, we all go up. Let us make ourselves and our Earth worthy of our lofty position amongst the stars.
