The Sultan of Swat
George Herman, famously known as Babe Ruth, is remembered as one of the greatest sports icons in American history. His remarkable journey from a reform school in Baltimore to baseball superstardom left an indelible mark on America, making him an enduring symbol of excellence and resilience.
Born on February 6, 1895, Babe Ruth was a legendary baseball player whose impact extended far beyond the diamond. His outstanding accomplishments and contributions thrilled the masses and brought baseball to the forefront as one of Americans’ favorite pastimes. Babe Ruth’s home-run hitting revolutionized baseball, making him the most celebrated American athlete of his time. His personal charisma and rags-to-riches life story immortalized him as the ‘Sultan of Swat’ after he became the first batter to hit 60 home runs in a single season in I(1927).
Also nicknamed ‘The Bambino,’ Babe Ruth’s mind-blowing statistics left teammates in sheer awe, leading Joe Dugan to describe him as “not human.” During his sports career, Ruth set numerous records as both a pitcher and a slugging outfielder. His offensive achievements in the game have led sports writers and historians to consider him one of the greatest American athletes of all time.
Not only did this hero shine on the field but he also had an impact on how Americans view the sport of baseball. After the Black Box scandal when eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of accepting bribes to lose the 1919 World Series, Ruth worked hard to put the joy back in the sport for Americans. He became the poster boy for baseball and his amazing achievements on the field drew fans back in.
Ruth’s larger-than-life persona made him one of the most famous Americans of his era. During the Great Depression, he gave hope to millions through his performances on the field. In our novel, “Adam in Taoland”, our hero Adam was a larger-than-life figure in the business world — and eventually used his authority to transform human existence in Aboodin as he and Diazamel gave purpose to all with the creation of ‘Awakenings.’
Just as Babe Ruth did with baseball, our ‘rising star’ Adam transformed his field of work with his inventions and implementation of AI for the greater good. He increased the fortunes of Tezhouse throughout the years he worked there. Perhaps our Adam might be immortalized as the ‘Implementer of AI for the good of humankind.’
Ruth’s impact on the game remains unparalleled. His legacy extends beyond baseball — embodying qualities demanded of any outstanding hero. Our character Adam also created a legacy beyond the business and political worlds — as he found his purpose in selfless service to others.
As we write our novels, we are inspired by many of history’s heroes in all areas of life. Our hero Adam left a legacy far beyond his accomplishments at Tezhouse, as he found his true calling ‘off the field.’ We feel that no matter what one does, we should seek to inspire others. Whether it be in sports, as a teacher, or especially in positions of power, it is our responsibility to become beacons of hope for the future and an inspiration to those that come after us.
Today, perhaps more than ever before in human history, our need for heroes, inspirational figures to whom we can look up to, has reached an all time high. Sadly, there are few, if any, whom we would single out at this moment. And many of the world’s citizens do look to sports,l heroes and entertainers for the lack of heroes in governments and leadership positions.
Let us hope the inspirational leadership we so badly need emerges soon. We clearly need that — and fortunately Mattel when the student is ready — the teacher always appears.
