Queen of Soul

Aretha Franklin, who earned the title ‘Queen of Soul,’ was an extremely influential figure in the realms of soul, R&B, and gospel music. She mastered the melding of these styles to create a style uniquely her own. Her vocal prowess was unforgettable – strong vocals combined with emotive and versatile expression. Her ability to convey raw emotions, from joy to sorrow, made her performances incredible and unforgettable.

With a background singing in church choir and as a pianist for church congregations, Aretha knew how to touch people’s hearts. At the age of only twelve she was promoted from the choir to become a featured soloist. Only two years later she began recording music.

It was clear from this beginning  that Aretha would make an impact on the music industry — although she struggled to find her place and sang in several different genres before she found her place. Her music pushed boundaries and broke new ground as she experimented with different styles and arrangements, infusing traditional gospel sounds with contemporary R&B and pop.

Once she found her footing,  Aretha released several iconic songs that topped charts including: Respect, Think, and Chain of Fools.  The songs were not only huge hits but also became anthems for feminists around the world and symbols of strength during the African Americans struggle for civil rights in America.

Her songs became anthems for the times, rallying young black people, especially women, but also transcending racial and cultural barriers to bring different types of people together by becoming symbols of empowerment and resilience for all marginalized communities.

Aretha Franklin is the perfect example of how when allowed to flourish one can find true passion in what they long to do. She shows that no matter where we come from or what adverse situations we find ourselves in, we can let our true uniqueness shine through. Through artistic expression, we can show our emotions, express our feelings, and create something like no one else has before.

In our novels, it is these liberties that are denied to the people of Adam’s homeland, Novana. We explore what it would be like if human artistic expression was completely suppressed and the result is a dim existence of nothingness. After centuries of allowing AI and bots to dominate their lives, Novanians had no clue about what makes them so uniquely human — and Adam makes it his self appointed mission to rescue them from mental enslavement.

Through his journey,  Adam learns to let his own success story become an inspiration to others – just as Aretha Franklin did when she paved the way for other musicians to explore music and find their own unique sounds. Her powerful lyrics inspire others to find their place, whether it be in music or in securing a foothold in their society.

In summary, Aretha Franklin's influence on music is profound and enduring. Through her unparalleled talent, innovation, and cultural impact, she helped shape the landscape of popular music and left an indelible mark on the industry.
